On June 12, 2016, Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old man, killed 49 people and wounded 53 more in a mass shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, United States. Mateen stated that he swore allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. This shooting had potential for creating division between two marginalized groups in the Western world: the LGBTQ+ community and Muslim communities. Two days later, various group in Waterloo Region organized a vigil to mourn and to affirm solidarity between these two marginalized groups. One photo is a shot of the crowd in front of Kitchener City Hall. The other photo is of two of the several speakers at the event - Fauzia Mazhar and Sarah Shafiq of the Coalition of Muslim Women of KW.
