Milestones: Support Groups
- 1973, Early
Waterloo Universities' Gay Liberation Movement (WUGLM) received its own office in the
Campus Centre (Room 217C), with a campus extension number.
This meant that WUGLM was able to offer support by telephone to members of the community.
The degree to which this was a support line varied over time; sometimes it was just a recorded
message; at other times over the decades of existence of WUGLM/GLLOW/GLOW there was actual
telephone counselling.
- 1975, July
In July, 1975, University of Guelph Homophile Association (UGHA) established
a gayline counselling service.
- 1987
The AIDS Committee of Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo & Area (ACCKWA) was incorporated
in 1987.
- 1987
The AIDS Committee of Guelph (ACG) had its inaugural Annual General Meeting in 1987.
- 1992, January
In January 1992, the Gay and Lesbian Liberation of Waterloo (GLLOW) began a discussion group on
Tuesday evenings. Since that time, GLLOW/GLOW has sponsored at least one discussion group
series with only brief interruptions at the end of academic terms.
By 1995, ACCKWA had already set up Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Youth Discussion Groups; we have
not yet established when this began.
