2002, July 13 (Saturday) * The Record: Gay couples rejoice over marriage ruling

Gay couples rejoice over marriage ruling This article by Cherri Greeno (Record staff) began with remarks from an interview with Kitchener couple Shelly Durocher and Melody Alderwick who indicated how pleased they were when they learned on July 12 that “a three-judge panel unanimously decided that prohibiting gay couples from marrying is unconstitutional and violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.” The article went on to say that “But the decision doesn't mean same-sex couples can be married legally yet. Ontario Superior Court Justice Heather Smith suspended yesterday's ruling in favour of gay marriage for two years, giving Parliament time to redefine the term marriage.” The article also included comments from another Kitchener couple Craig Hunter and Jason Moore (who were planning a wedding for July of the next year). The article also included statements from “Kevin Bourassa and partner Joe Varnell of Toronto, who were instrumental in getting this decision handed down.” The article points out that although the Toronto couple had used an old Christian tradition of having the banns read (at the gay-friendly Metropolitan Community Church in Toronto), the province refused to recognize their marriage. Apparently Erika Kubassek of Cambridge travelled to Toronto to protest this ceremony. The article also included remarks condemning the ruling by Rev. Adam Wroblewicz from Sacred Heart Catholic parish in Kitchener. The article pointed out that “Same-sex marriages are not recognized in any Canadian province. The only country where they are legally acknowledged is the Netherlands.” The article concluded with a statement by A.J. Mahari (editor of The Voice Magazine, which served the local rainbow communities) who felt that marriage equality was inevitable and just a matter of time.

2002, July 13 (Saturday) * London Pride 2002 Back to Our Roots

“With the financial strain on HALO, (Homophile Association of London Ontario) reorganization came to be in order and this year Pride Event's are a bit more downscaled. All the Pride partying has been centered around one day; Saturday July 13. That is the big day. All events kick off at 11:00 am at Centennial Hall and the day does not stop until the wee hours of the morning. The day includes live entertainment, the crowning of Mr. and Ms. Gay London, a fashion show and lots of crafters and vendors and so much more. Along with that Museum London is hosting the exhibit Boys with Needles and as part of their ongoing alternative art cinema series Rainbow Cinemas is hosting the Argentinean film Burnt Money. Therefore, even though HALO's sponsored event had to be downscaled; there are an ever-growing number of grassroots organizations that are filling the social void. For further information please check out: http://www.halolondon.ca and http://www.pride.london.on.ca Thanks so much and see you in London!”
