To his credit, [director] Demme does neither.”

In the "Forum" section of the newspaper, this is an open letter/personal essay written by Andrew Brouwer under a column titled “The Rainbow Voice”. This piece is partially about seeing the film, Philadelphia, with three straight friends, but very much about how he had “begun to think of all the implications in my life that are affected by my sexuality,” Brouwer explores the complicated dynamics one has to move through in a heteronormative world, be it at school, work, or with family and friends. He also share his experiences doing work with GLLOW and the Guelph Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Equality groups. Brouwer writes, “What I have tried to present is that gay, lesbian and bisexual people face enormous pressure to conform to a heterosexual society...In my lifetime, I hope to look forward to a time when I can feel comfortable about being gay in every aspect of my life, not just in my personal time.”

In the "Forum" section of the newspaper, this is an open letter/personal essay written by Andrew Brouwer under a column titled “The Rainbow Voice”. This op-ed discussed the themes of “religion & sexuality”, and the writer's personal and broader societal thoughts on the impact of religion on 2SLGBTQIA+ people, particularly the impact of religious families not accepting gay & lesbian youth, who in turn, make up such a large percentage of homeless youth. Brouwer says, “What I want to do is not to criticize other people's faith journey, but to try and understand why some groups seek to be so unresponsive in caring for them.” Of note, is the placement of this column alongside other columns titled, "The Village Atheist", "Religion & Faith in the 20th Century", and "The Qu'ran Speaks".

Gay and childless - NDP bill the right move, Cambridge pair say. This article by Beth Gallagher (Record staff) was based on an interview with gay couple Dr. Gary Gibson and Douglas Saunders of Cambridge. The pair was asked for their reactions to the bill proposed by the Ontario NDP government “that would, among other things, allow same-sex couples in Ontario to adopt children together.” The couple felt that the proposed bill was mostly of symbolic value since it would acknowledge that same-sex relationships were largely the same as those of opposite-sex couples. The article reported that most of the local MPPs had announced that they would voting against the bill - including 3 NDP MPPs.

Atwal states, “The idea that individuals who are gay cannot be loving parents, is, of course, absolute bullshit.” [NOTE: Bill 167 was defeated on June 9, 1994, largely because 12 NDP members broke ranks with their party on this issue. This bitter defeat led to renewed efforts to gain human rights for the queer community in Ontario; these efforts were ultimately successful several years later.]

Every child deserves a female mother and a male father! This article by Editor Bob Verdun referred to Ontario Bill 167 and began with “While there is not much chance that the so-called "same-sex benefits" bill will actually be approved in the Ontario legislature, the fact that it has such a high priority from this province's government is cause for alarm.” Verdun focuses on one aspect of that Bill, namely the granting of adoption rights to same-sex domestic partnerships. He spilled a great deal of ink in attacking this notion. At one point he stated that “it is a big jump from tolerating and accepting homosexuals to giving them unlimited rights to raise children.” Verdun took particular aim at K-W Record columnist Rose Simone for saying that “the provincial NDP should be imposing its same-sex legislation as a matter of government policy, rather than allowing the bill to come to a "free vote." She attacked Bob Rae's government as lacking "principles and courage."”

On p.B4 of The Record, 1994, June 18 (Saturday), there was an article entitled “Recognize rights and duties of same-sex couples, group says” by Beth Gallagher (Record staff). The article was based largely on an interview with Caitlin Glasson and Yvon Coté, who discussed their new group, the Waterloo Region Alliance for Equal Rights. (The article included a large photograph of Cait and Yvon.) They indicated that their group wanted “laws changed to recognize that same-sex couples have responsibilities, as well as rights.” They made it clear that their group arose because of the defeat of the Ontario NDP government's Bill 167, which “would have given same-sex couples the right to employee benefits and to adopt as a couple.” The article went on to say “So the fledgling group plans to start by polling local governments and social agencies about their policies on same-sex couples.” The article mentioned that Waterloo Region and the City of Kitchener provided their employees with same-sex benefits, but the City of Waterloo and the City of Cambridge did not. The article also gave some information about policies of local social services. It concluded with a note that there had been an encouraging meeting between the new group and Mark Yantzi, a Kitchener and regional councillor.

Anti-gay remarks defy logic. The photocopy of this letter to the Editor lacks a date, but the author of the letter was replying to an article written on June 24, so we guess that the current letter was published around June 30. In the letter, David Grant took issue with Gerald Wright's June 24 Insight column Expect a Backlash, in which Wright had apparently equated the right to live in a same-sex relationship with problems associated with nuclear arms, over-population and the political upheaval in Bosnia and Rwanda. Grant pointed out that he was himself not promiscous, and had been “living in a long-term loving and monogamous relationship for several years.” Grant also disclosed that he was HIV-positive, and was offended by Wright's comparison of AIDS and heart disease.

Needle exchange program in region - Effort would curb HIV spread, report says. This article by Beth Gallagher (Record staff) began “Addicts who inject drugs need a place in Waterloo Region where they can exchange used needles for clean ones to help prevent the spread of HIV, a local study says.” Rob Gascho, ACCKWA's education co-ordinator, said that “If someone is already using injection drugs, they don't need HIV on top of that.” The survey also reported a lot of interest in having anonymous testing, which the local health unit had applied to the Ontario of Health for, but not yet been granted. [The hoped-for start date of January 1994 clearly did not happen; the Ministry of Health obviously did not grant permission when it was requested.]

Drug abuse counselling a must: Sax. The photocopy of this article by Beth Gallagher (Record staff) lacks a date, but is stapled to the other article by Beth Gallagher on the same subject, so we are assuming that this article is very close in date to the other one. This article is based on an interview with Dr. Richard Sax, Waterloo Region's medical officer of health, who was quoted as saying “A needle exchange program should include counselling for drug addicts, in addition to handing out clean needles for used ones.” Sax also said that workers at ACCKWA “could provide guidance to addicts who want to get off drugs.”

The article included comments by the two organizers, local activists Yvon Coté and Cait Glasson (of Waterloo Region Alliance for Equal Rights), who indicated that of the 70 politicians who had been invited to the event, only three showed up to support the cause: Bob Mazmanian, Ernie Anderson and Scott Piatkowski (all three being candidates for municipal office).
