The next dance was scheduled for late September, but the closing of the Cabaret has caused the Womyn's Group to postpone the event while looking for another venue. 1989, September * Pink Triangle Community Calendar (PTCC) Began

The September 1989 issue was the inaugural one of the Pink Triangle Community Calendar (PTCC) created for the rainbow community in Waterloo-Wellington. It was begun by two GLLOW members, Lisa Simkins and Karen Davidson. The PTCC eventually developed into a monthly newsletter, which included articles in addition to its initial listings of events, organizations, club and classified ads Some time in 1992, GLLOW took over responsibility for producing the PTCC. It was published by GLLOW, off and on, until January 1996.

The entry in the ArQuives (Canada's LGBTQ2+ Archives) indicates that this was a monthly publication, and gives the CLGA holdings as: 1989: Sep-Dec; 1990: Jan-Mar, May-Dec; 1991: Jan-Feb, Mar- Dec; 1992: Jan-Jun. [source: ArQuives Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives.]

This issue of the Pink Triangle Community Calendar had 4 unnumbered pages. It consisted of a folded sheet of pink paper sized 27.9 cm x 21.6 cm (11.0" x 8.5"). The front and back pages had a format size of 21.6 cm x 14.0 cm (8.5" x 5.5") to be read in portrait orientation. The two central pages were a centre-fold of 27.9 cm x 21.6 cm (11.0" x 8.5") to be read in portrait orientation - but rotated 90° with respect to the front and back pages.

The front page of this issue was devoted to explaining the scope of the publication, indicating that the producers intended to develop it beyond its current form to include profiles of organizations, and other articles of interest. The centre-fold was entitled Calendar of Events. The back page listed local organizations and clubs; it concluded with some classified ads. The following organizations were listed on the back page: AIDS Committee of Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo and Area (ACCKWA); AIDS Committee of Guelph & Wellington County; Gay and Lesbian Liberation of Waterloo (GLLOW); Gay and Lesbian Youth of Kitchener-Waterloo; Gays Out Of Doors (GOOD); Guelph Gay Equality; Grand River Free Spirit Community Church; The Womyn's Group; and Women Out Of Doors (WOODS). The Clubs listed were The Robin's Nest (Cambridge) and The Half and Half Club (Kitchener).

Society can't afford to hide from this problem. Our copy is photocopied to the backs of photocopies of the 1989 October issue of Pink Triangle Community Calendar that featured ACCKWA. The article by Ian Kirkby reports on an incident in which a student at Waterloo Collegiate Institute approached her principal indicating that she “wanted to distribute condoms to students after school on the last day of AIDS Awareness Week.” The principal refused. The reporter also talked with Elizabeth Witmer, the Chair of the Waterloo County Board of Education, who showed no interest in the matter. The reporter felt that this was an abdication of responsibility to the health of the students.

1989, November * Pink Triangle Community Calendar (PTCC)

This issue had 4 unnumbered pages, and also a one-sheet insert (subscription form). It consisted of a folded sheet of pink paper sized 27.9 cm x 21.6 cm (11.0" x 8.5") with a one-sheet insert sized 21.6 cm x 14.0 cm (8.5" x 5.5"). The front and back pages had a format size of 21.6 cm x 14.0 cm (8.5" x 5.5") to be read in portrait orientation. The two central pages were a centre-fold of 27.9 cm x 21.6 cm (11.0" x 8.5") to be read in portrait orientation - which is to say, rotated 90° with respect to the front and back pages.

Our copy has several holes punched in it, resulting in the loss of a small amount of text — on the first page, the last sentence evidently reads “We'll see you there.” and on the back page, the WANTED notice likely reads “WANTED Gay Pride Day Buttons. Call Lisa...”

The front page of this issue was headed Womyn Coming Together — Once Again. This opening article indicated that the “Women's Social Dicussion Group” began in 1988, February and eventually became “The Womyn's Group”, which went on to host “some of the largest women's events this community has ever experienceed.” The article then refers to the fact that the scope was broadened from lesbians to all women, and that, since its inception, it has organized movie nights and dances. The article concludes by referring to the special dance that they have organized called Womyn Coming Together to be held at the Robin's Nest on November 3. [NOTE: This article also indicates that one of the local clubs, the Cabaret was now closed.]

The centre-fold was entitled Calendar of Events (which are listed in this Chronology).

The back page also included a large ad for the November 11 (Saturday) Dance. with the following description: “Too late for Hallowe'en And not quite Christmas... Guess it's time for a GLLOW DANCE Saturday, November 11, 1989 Hagey Hall Rooms 373-378 9pm - 1am”

1989, November/December * WOODS: FYI

An FYI about WOODs as a group: “WOODs. WOODs is a non-profit social and recreational group for women in Kitchener-Waterloo and area. Events are varied, including movie nights, beach days, camping, cycling, and anything other activity members are interested in. We encourage members to help coordinate an activity or two at their convenience. We are always looking for new things to do, so if you have an idea, give us a call. Members receive monthly calendars, and of course, access to a wonderful community of women. Non-members are welcome at all events. Starting in January 1990, a nominal fee of $1 per event will be charged for non-members attending. With the new year approaching, members with 1989 memberships should think about renewing now. Special Offer: Until the end of November, housemates of members (i.e. at same address) will be offered half-price memberships. What a deal. For more information, call the WOODs coordinators Lisa and Kim at the numbers below.” On this page, there is the address and contact info for Lisa and Kim. There is also a loose membership form for folks to mail back to the WOODS office, which, at the time of this newsletter, was 54 Weber Street South, #10, in Waterloo, ON.

1989, November (likely; date not known) * Waterloo Chronicle: Fire Shabas Quarantine is no answer to AIDS

Fire Shabas Quarantine is no answer to AIDS. This article by Ian Kirkby (who worked for the Waterloo Chronicle at this time) is photocopied on the back of an article in the K-W Record from 1989, November 30; we therefore surmise that the article by Kirkby was published around 1989, November. In this article Kirkby takes issue with the recent recommendation by Dr. Richard Shabas (Ontario's chief medical officer of health) of quarantine for “people exposed to the virus who continue to have any form of intercourse with anybody.” This was a rather controversial recommendation at the time. The author quotes very negative reactions from the AIDS Committee of Toronto, and also from Larry MacLean, executive director of ACCKWA (AIDS Committee of Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo and Area.

The front page of this issue was headed Expressions of Individuality, and profiled Surrender Dorothy, a local Waterloo store selling women's and men's vintage clothing and accessories. It is a woman-owned amd woman-operated small business that “supports an alternative culture that encourages creative and diverse expressions of individuality .”

The centre-fold was entitled Calendar of Events (which are listed in this Chronology).
