1981, February 6 (Friday) * Imprint News: University of Winnipeg Homophobia

On p.2 of the Imprint, Vol.3, No.26, 1981, February 6 (Friday), in the “news shorts” section, there was a report entitled “U of W collegiate student told to leave class”, which described how a “staunch Mennonite” professor, Dave Dueck, at the University of Winnipeg had recently asked a gay student, Greg Cymenko, to leave a film studies class because the professor didn't want him sitting next to the guest lecturer, since other students might think that the guest lecturer would also be gay. In excusing his actions, the professor “also said ‘I don't mind a person being gay. I feel sorry for them because I know they are not going to be as happy and satisfied as I am.’ Dueck added that he is not against homosexuals: ‘But I do feel they [homosexuals] encourage other people to take the gay habit.’” [EDITORIAL REMINDER: 10% Is Not Enough! Encourage Other People To Take Up The Gay Habit!]

1981, February 20 (Friday) * Imprint News: University of Winnipeg Homophobia

On p.7 of the Imprint, Vol.3, No.28, 1981, February 20 (Friday), there was a further news report on instructor Dave Dueck of the University of Winnipeg entitled “Teacher quits”, in which it was reported that Dueck had resigned. The news report stated that the Dean had met with members of the faculty, who were shocked by Dueck's actions. Dueck himself had made further attempts to justify his actions by noting that Greg Cymenko was not a regular member of his class, and that Dueck had asked Cymenko to bring the guest lecturer to the class to speak, and then asked Cymenko to leave because he was homosexual.”

1981, February 27 (Friday) * Imprint: Toronto Raids & The Day The Homos Disappeared

On pp.10-11 of the Imprint, Vol.3, No.29, 1981, February 27 (Friday), there was a short article by Liz Wood entitled “Only the grumpy ones were left...!”; it was followed by a reprint from the Body Politic of a satirical piece by Robin Hardy entitled “The Day The Homos Disappeared.” The short article by Liz Wood began “The title of this social comment humour piece sounds funny, right? When it was first published last December [1980] that's what most gay people thought, too. But since February 5th, when four bathhouse clubs were raided by 150 Metro Toronto police, and over 300 people arrested, many gays don't think ‘the day the homos disappeared’ is so funny anymore.” Woods goes on to note that there had recently been marches with over 3000 people in Toronto demanding an inquiry into this waste of police power and pointless damage to the clubs, as well as “a pointless and cruel intrusion into the privacy of 286 men arrested only as ‘found-ins’ in a common bawdy house (the police description).” The famous piece of satire by Robin Hardy describes the inconveniences, confusion, and utter havoc caused in the lives of the heterosexual population of Toronto when all the homosexuals mysteriously vanish one day.
[Note: The satirical reprint as it appears in the online copy of the Imprint is difficult to read because much of the text in the gutter of the copy that was digitized was not captured, presumably because that copy was too tightly bound.]

1981, March 6 (Friday) * Imprint: Toronto Raids & The Day The Homos Disappeared: Rebuttal

On p.4 (concluded on p.8) of the Imprint, Vol.3, No.30, 1981, March 6 (Friday), in the “Letters” section, there was a letter from Pete Corbett entitled “Self-proclaimed Grump denounces gay ‘flaunting’”. Corbett argued that the Metro Toronto police were just enforcing the law when they conducted the bathhouse raids. He was also upset by the satirical piece by Robin Hardy for several reasons: because it portrayed the heterosexual population as dependent on the gay population for so much, because he believed the 10 percent figure to be quite inflated, and finally because the piece presented gay people as normal. He amplified on the latter point in the following remarks. “I am not arguing that they are not normal in the sense that they hold jobs, go to movies, etc. like anybody else, including wife beaters, child molestors and anybody else afflicted with one of several sexual sicknesses. I accept the fact that gays are people. I do not feel that I should be expected to believe that they are normal people. Even more so, I resent the ‘chic to be gay’ syndrome that seems to be infecting society.”

1981, March 7 (Saturday) * International Women's Day: Hysteria/GLOW Party

Saturday, March 7 ... International Women's Day party, sponsored by Hysteria magazine and Gay Liberation of Waterloo. Films, games, dancing, cash bar. Humanities Lounge, U of W, 8 pm-1 am. $2.50 admission.” [Note: It is possible that this party may also have been intended to celebrate the tenth anniversary of GLOW, founded on 1971, March 8 as Waterloo Universities' Gay Liberation Movement (WUGLM).]
[source: Imprint, Vol.3, No.30, 1981, March 6 (Friday), “Campus Events,” p.1.]

On p.13 of Imprint, Vol.3, No.30, 1981, March 6 (Friday), there was an article by Moe Lyons entitled “Celebration: Women's Day Events”, in which the following description of the Saturday night party is given. “The main event here, however, in celebration of IWD will take place on Saturday night at 8 pm in the Humanities Lounge at the University of Waterloo. This is a party co-sponsored by Hysteria magazine and Gay Liberation of Waterloo. The evening will featrue films, games, music and lots of dancing. As well, there will be a cash bar. The admission is $2.50 and it is an open party. The theme is ‘Women or men, “gay” or “straight” Come along and celebrate’. [It doesn't scan, but of course Women had to be first, in light of the celebration.] If you're ‘straight’ and you're shy about coming to a party with ‘gay’ people, or if your concern is precisely the opposite, don't worry about it. Nobody is going to care one way or the other and most won't be dancing in couples anyway. [Finally a chance just to dance with all your friends.]”

On p.9 of the Imprint, Vol.3, No.31, 1981, March 13 (Friday), in the “Letters” section, there was a response from J. Szalai (entitled “Former student: ‘I will if you will!’”) to the letter from Pete Corbett in the previous issue of the Imprint. [Joe Szalai was a prominent member of the Kitchener-Waterloo Gay Media Collective.] Joe's letter read: “Poor Pete Corbett. Seems to be suffering from the homophobia blues. But don't worry Pete, homophobia can be cured. Unfortunately, until you overcome this malady, your thoughts will continue to be to intelligence what Hostess Twinkies are to food. But don't despair, I'll make a deal with you. I'll come out of the closet as a ‘faggot’, ‘queer’, ‘cock-sucker’, ‘fruit’, or whatever else you want to call me. If you come out as a twit.”

1981, March 20 (Friday) * Imprint: Toronto Raids & The Day The Homos Disappeared: 2nd Rejoinder

On p.8 of the Imprint, Vol.3, No.32, 1981, March 20 (Friday), in the “Letters” section, there was a response from Don Bruton (entitled “Police raids are an attack on us all”) to the letter from Pete Corbett in the March 6 issue of the Imprint. Bruton began by stating that, like Corbett, he believed that gay people were abnormal, and that “gay realtionships are generally more casual, more sexually orientated and less meaningful than heterosexual relationships. I also agree with Mr. Corbett in not wanting anybody to cram their sexual preferences down my throat (or anywhere else, anatomically).” Bruton appears to be referring here to the satire by Robin Hardy. Bruton, however, went on to take issue with Corbett on the recent bathhouse raids. He pointed out that, unlike the case of body rub parlours, men were not paying for sex in the bathhouses, and the sex was occurring “inside locked cubicles, within private clubs which were open to members-only.” He felt that this was an abuse of police powers and a human rights issue concerning a person's right to privacy. He concluded by comparing the situation “to the Red Scare and McCarthyism only 30 years ago.”

1981, June 5 (Friday) * Imprint: Protection Under Ontario Human Rights Code

On p.3 of the Imprint, Vol.4, No.3, 1981, June 5 (Friday), in the “News” section there was a news story by Mike Farrabee entitled “Gays want protection in Human Rights code.” The story noted that Bill 7, introduced in the Ontario Legislature in late April of 1981, was intended “to revise and extend protection of Human Rights based on a report by the Ontario Human Rights Commission entitled Living Together.” The story went on to say that the latter report had recommended the inclusion of sexual orientation in the Act, but this did not appear in the recent revision of Bill 7. The story concluded by noting that the Coalition for Gay Rights in Ontario (CGRO), with the support of many other organizations (including the UW Federation of Students, UW Faculty Association and CKMS Radio), had recently presented a brief to members of the Provincial Legislature with the title “The Ontario Human Rights Omission” which spoke in favour of including sexual orientation in Bill 7.

1981, June 19 (Friday) * Imprint: Same-Sex Personal Ad

In the middle of a summer in which Gay Liberation of Waterloo (GLOW) seemed to have been “thinking about something else” on the University of Waterloo campus, there appeared in the student newspaper, Imprint, what may have been the first same-sex personal ad to grace the pages of that publication. On p.4 of the Imprint, Vol.4, No.4, 1981, June 19 (Friday), in the “Personal” part of the “Classified” section, the following ad appeared: “Feisty Male Physics Student wishes to meet same for discrete encounters. Call Tony van D##### at ###-####.” [We have supressed the person's full name since it is likely that this was intended as a joke, given the tone of the ad, and the use of “discrete” where “discreet” was intended: the kind of word play for which nerds have become notorious. Or, the Physics Student in question may simply have been “telling it like it is” (or was). We'll probably never know.]

1981, October 1 (Thursday) * Lesbian Organization of Kitchener: Womyn's Coffeehouse

On p.13 of the Imprint, Vol.4, No.10, 1981, September 25 (Friday), in the “Personal” area of the “Classified” section was the following notice: “Womyn's Coffeehouse is moving from CC 110 to ## Margaret Avenue, Kitchener, 8:30 p.m. Thursday, October 1st. Sponsored by the Lesbian Organization of Kitchener (LOOK). Open to all women.” It appears that the Womyn's Coffeehouse was not simply another name for the Women's Issues Group, which had occasionally advertised its events on Thursday in CC 110, since in following issues of Imprint the Women's Issues Group continued to meet in the Campus Centre on Thursday meetings at around the same time that the Womyn's Coffeehouse was evidently meeting on Margaret Avenue. If there was a relationship between the two, it may have been broken at the September 24 meeting; or, perhaps there really had been two distinct groups which had just coincidentally used CC 110 on different Thursday evenings over the past year or so.
